Overhead contact line electrification of trucks (eHighway) is being used in on German motorways since 2018, including on the A1 between Hamburg and Lübeck. In September 2021 the German federal transport ministry announced a scaling up of this solution in two corridors of around 100 km each.
This development opens up not just possibilities for green road transport, but for a much more connected, autonomous and even shared future for heavy road transport. The benefits of eHighway are not limited to its high maturity and strong savings of energy, cost and emissions, but also include its compatibility and complementarity with other technologies and fuels.
